Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
One of my personal favorite eras for car design with some solid upgrades. The all-steel body maintains its historic pre-war proportions, but mechanically this car is more post-war: with a 400ci Chevrolet small-block V8 and Turbo 375 automatic transmission ensures a very different drive than the original flatheads, the front boxing plates and a Mustang II-style independent front suspension should modernize the ride characteristics and support the additional power. These classic lines and V8 sound will turn some heads.
Description
This 1940 Ford 5-Window Coupe is a custom street rod that began a restoration approximately 20 years ago before being acquired by the seller six years ago and completed in 2024. The build utilizes a modified stock chassis paired with a rebuilt Chevrolet small-block engine and updated suspension components. Finished in an unspecified bright yellow exterior color, the vehicle features functional modern amenities including climate control and power steering. The coupe is now offered by the private seller with a clean Carolina title. The vehicle is located in Green Sea, South Carolina.

The steel body maintains its classic 5-window profile and factory-style proportions. It rides on a staggered set of 15-inch Billet Specialties alloy wheels mounted with 195/60 front and P255/70 rear tires. Exterior trim, bumpers, and brightwork are present, while the glass and rubber seals were addressed during the final stages of the build completion.

The engine bay houses a rebuilt 400ci Chevrolet small-block V8 that has been fitted with a mid-level street camshaft. Cooling is handled by a Walker radiator, and the engine accessories are driven by a front-runner style system that supports a power steering pump and a Vintage Air compressor. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Turbo 375 three-speed automatic transmission linked to a 1966 Chevrolet II rear axle equipped with 3.23:1 gears.

The factory frame has been modified with boxing plates along the front section to increase rigidity. Suspension updates include a Mustang II-style independent front end setup and Chassis Engineering mounts for the engine, transmission, and rear leaf springs. Braking is provided by a four-wheel manual system, and the undercarriage features a dual exhaust system routed past the modified chassis components.

The cabin is upholstered in a combination of tan and black leather and vinyl. The interior features front bucket seats along with folding rear jump seats that stow against the back wall of the cab. Driver controls consist of a floor-mounted automatic shifter and a modern aftermarket steering wheel, while comfort is maintained via a integrated Vintage Air climate control system supplying both heat and air conditioning. Standard instrumentation is mounted in the body-colored dashboard.
