Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

This Carryall has the kind of personality you just don't see anymore. The color combo alone tells you this build was done by someone who wanted it to stand out, but it still feels cohesive instead of overdone. That rebuilt 350ci and overdrive transmission setup is exactly what makes a vintage truck like this enjoyable in the real world. You get the classic V8 feel without fighting it on the highway. The updated wheel and tire package gives it a tougher stance while still keeping the soul of the truck intact, and the spacious interior makes this thing feel more like a vintage road-trip machine than just a show piece. What I like most is that it doesn't come across as trying too hard. It's big, comfortable, unapologetically custom, and feels like the kind of truck you'd actually want to grab the keys and drive!

Description

The 1966 GMC Carryall is powered by a rebuilt 350ci V8 paired with a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission with just 16,147 miles on the rebuild. Finished in turquoise with a custom pearl white roof featuring heavy blue metal flake, the truck has been modified with updated wheels, air conditioning, and an upgraded drivetrain while retaining its original two-door Carryall body configuration. The interior is trimmed in turquoise and black vinyl with front and rear bench seating. This GMC is offered with a clean title status and is sold by Revheads LLC out of St. Louis, Missouri

The body is finished in turquoise with a pearl white roof accented by heavy blue metal flake. Exterior details include chrome trim, dual side mirrors, and a two-door SUV body configuration with rear cargo access. A set of 20-inch US Mags Desperado 6 wheels has been installed with Toyo Extensa HP II tires measuring 245/45R20 at all four corners. The truck retains its full-size Carryall proportions along with a painted steel roof and wraparound side glass.

Power is provided by a rebuilt 350ci V8 equipped with electronic ignition and paired with a 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission. The drivetrain has been updated to provide lower highway cruising RPM compared to the factory transmission configuration. Cooling is handled through a front-mounted radiator setup, and power is routed to the rear wheels through a conventional rear differential.

The undercarriage retains a body-on-frame layout consistent with the model's original construction. Suspension components, steering configuration, and axle specifications were not disclosed, though the truck rides on a modern 20-inch wheel and tire package. Front disk brakes and Rear drum brakes.

The cabin features turquoise and black vinyl upholstery with a 70/30 front bench seat and a matching rear bench offering extended passenger legroom. Interior equipment includes air conditioning, an AM/FM radio, painted metal trim surfaces, and a factory-style dashboard layout. Instrumentation is positioned behind the steering wheel within the stock gauge housing, and the truck retains a spacious passenger compartment designed to accommodate multiple occupants.

What gear ratio? Was a torque converter put in for the OD? Was drive shaft shorted with correct 27 spline?

Revheads Seller Jun 9, 2:46 pm PDT
The car currently has 3.73 gears in the rear end. The lockup on the converter is not hooked up, and the driveshaft has been shortened as part of the drivetrain setup.
Patches Jun 9, 7:10 pm PDT
Thank you for your reply. I am genuinely curious as to why the lockup wouldn't be hooked up. I'm no expert, but my concern is transmission overheating and efficiency of gears. Would you mind explaining the pros and cons of not hooking it up. Also is it in place and just not connected?
Revheads Seller Jun 10, 9:05 am PDT
No the transmission will work perfectly as a four speed. The lockup converter will lower cruise RPM by approximately 300 RPM at highway speeds.
Revheads Seller Jun 10, 9:12 am PDT
So there are no overheating issues at all with this truck. This truck was professionally built from the ground up and is not a backyard or do-it-yourself build. The components were selected and installed correctly, and the cooling system was designed to handle the power the truck is making. It runs and drives exactly as it should, and overheating has not been an issue for the current owner.
Patches Bidder • Jun 8, 4:37 pm PDT

What gear ratio is it? Does it have a torque converter lock up for the 4th gear?
