Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

A-code fastbacks are arguably better handling and better performing cars than the famed S-code. The 289ci V8 in this one delivers period-correct performance, supported by functional upgrades like an Edelbrock intake manifold and a Champion aluminum radiator. While the undercarriage and manual drum brakes retain their stock, factory-specification layout, the cabin has been completely modernized with premium TMI seating and a integrated Dakota Digital instrument cluster. This is the ideal template for anyone wanting to drive a classic Mustang that's already a finished car, or do what the previous owner couldn't and go all-in on a full QA1 coilover and Wilwood disc setup.

Description

This 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback was originally an A-code example, equipped with the 225HP 289ci V8. The car features a recently completed exterior repaint, a front disc brake conversion, and a fully overhauled interior with modern instrumentation and seating. Offered on behalf of the selling dealer in Chicago, Illinois, the vehicle retains its factory-style chassis configuration while incorporating updated lighting and window tint. It is now offered with a clean Illinois title.

The fastback body was recently repainted in dark highland green and features aftermarket tint applied to all windows, including the windshield. Exterior equipment includes factory-style bumpers, brightwork, and trim pieces, which are complemented by replacement LED lighting assemblies at the front and rear for improved visibility. The car retains its standard factory-style wheels and tires, and the panels align in a stock configuration.

The engine bay houses a period correct "A-Code" 289ci Ford V8 engine equipped with a carbureted fuel system, Edelbrock intake manifold, polished aluminum valve covers, and a new matte black air cleaner. The compartment maintains a largely stock layout with original-style routing for the hoses, wiring, and accessories, though engine cooling is now provided by a Champion aluminum radiator. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a three-speed automatic transmission. The seller notes the exhaust system has been updated to produce a deeper note than the factory setup.

The chassis and undercarriage retain their factory-specification components, including the stock suspension setup. The front drum brakes are gone in favor of a power disc brake conversion, with original drums in the rear. The floor pans, frame rails, and suspension linkages present in a condition consistent with the vehicle's age and historical maintenance. The steering system is a standard manual configuration, and the rear axle assembly remains in a stock location.

The interior has received a major overhaul, and features updated bucket seats and a matching dash pad sourced from TMI. The factory dashboard layout has been upgraded with a set of Dakota Digital gauges designed to fit within the original instrument cluster location. Additional interior features include replacement black carpeting, factory-style door panels, and standard manual window regulators. True chassis mileage is unknown, with 3434 miles appearing on the digital odometer readout.
