Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

This Chevelle is the kind of car that tells a real honest story and its backed up by the factory build sheet that has managed to survive all these years. Even though it started life as a small-block Malibu in triple green, it's been transformed into a big-block brawler without trying to hide anything. Stepping up to a 454 is a much needed move, and since the drivetrain is upgraded with a TH400 and a 12-bolt posi, the car is actually built to handle that big-block torque rather than just looking the part. It's great to see that the "boring" stuff that makes a car reliable wasn't overlooked like the newly resealed transmission, a fresh Quadrajet carb and new master cylinder. You're gonna get hard hitting classic muscle but it will be a little safer to control on the road, especially with the front disc conversion, Hotchkis shocks, and BMR rear springs. Because it's a tribute with a history of long-term ownership, there's a lot to appreciate in the execution of the Fathom Blue over black, though it's worth noting the minor dash cracks and paint chips that come with an honest driver. It's a solid, no-reserve A-body that's clearly been enjoyed, making it the perfect choice for someone who wants to actually get out and drive instead of just staring at a trailer queen.

Description

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS Tribute started its life as a non-SS small block Malibu in triple green (Misty Green Metallic paint, dark green vinyl top and dark green interior), which has been authenticated by the factory build sheet that has survived with the vehicle and included in the photo gallery. Originally optioned with a 307ci V8 and TH350 automatic, the vehicle was assembled at the Van Nuys plant in California and delivered to Union Chevrolet in Memphis, Tennessee. This Chevelle has since been modified over the years to be an SS tribute. The car now has a higher displacement 454ci V8 and a vinyl top delete with a full repaint to Fathom Blue Metallic with painted white stripes, a black interior, SS badging, and minor suspension and braking upgrades. It has been reported that the vehicle was most recently owned by an older gentleman for a number of years before selling the car to a dealer due to illness. The vehicle was then acquired by the current seller in March of 2026. This Chevelle is being offered at no reserve by a private seller with a clean Illinois title.

At some point in the vehicle's history, the vehicle was modified to be an SS tribute. The 307ci V8 was swapped out for a period correct 454ci V8 and was more recently updated with an all new Quadrajet carburetor and new fuel lines and hoses. On the buildsheet, the M38 code for the transmission indicates that the car originally came equipped with the TH350 3 speed automatic transmission, which has been replaced with a TH400. The transmission was recently serviced and resealed. Other upgrades and recent service include:

  1. New 3 inch exhaust
  2. New Magnaflow mufflers
  3. Hooker long tube headers
  4. New alternator bracket
  5. New fan shroud
  6. New core support panel
  7. New valve cover hardware
  8. Recently resealed valve covers
  9. New spark plug wires
  10. New upper radiator hose
  11. New master cylinder w/ brake booster
  12. New fuel tank with new sender
  13. Holley mechanical fuel pump

The vehicle retains much of the original suspension geometry but has been recently modified with a Summit front disc brake conversion kit that includes 2 inch drop spindles, and Hotchkis front and rear shocks. BMR rear lowering springs have been installed recently, the vehicle also has new rear brake lines and new rear wheel cylinders. Also equipped is a 12 bolt rear end with posi-traction that was recently serviced.

Originally Misty Green Metallic, this Chevelle now sports Fathom Blue Metallic and painted white stripes that were period correct on many SS trim Chevelles. Minor paint chips are visible in the photos. Other features of the exterior include new hood hinges, OEM chrome trim, halogen headlights and taillights, American Racing Torq Thrust 18 inch wheels in the front, and 20 inch wheels in the rear.

The factory build sheet indicates the car was equipped with a full dark green interior, which has now been all replaced with OEM interior components in black such as the headliner, dashboard, steering wheel, steering column, seats, seat belts and carpet. The vehicle originally came with a front bench seat and column shift, but now has bucket seats and a center console with floor shifter. The interior also has all new door panels. Some visible cracks are noted on the dashboard.

Included with the sale will be one set of keys, the original build sheet, and a binder with parts receipts from the private seller. The vehicle is located in San Diego, California.

@caozman Hey there! I didn't see an alert to your tag. I guess that's the first thing we'll have to put on our list.

caozman Apr 16, 12:30 pm PDT
This car was an absolute steal. I thing we should give the site owners a suggestion that they make user names with an @ at the front a hyperlink to their email (like BaT).

OK, I did get an alert that there was your reply to my comment

What a beautiful SS454 tribute. A great way to enjoy the exhilaration of driving/showing a classic muscle car without the lofty entry fee. Absolutely fantastic build.

This looks like a Great Car!! My Buddy, Mike, bought a '70 SS 396 Chevelle that looked just like this. Same Blue with Black Buckets and a Rockin' Stereo! He had just sold his '69 SS 396 4 speed Chevelle because he was mesmerized by the Kewl Cowl Induction on the 1970 model.

Am I going to be charged $250. by LINK everytime I make a bid? If I don't get high bid, I'm I still out the $250. ?

joeshmo Staff Apr 9, 10:16 am PDT
Hi @WadePierson, I'm one of the lead Auction Support specialists here at BuyTheCar. I can definitely answer that for you. You only get charged the $250 if you win the auction. When you place your first bid on any auction, we place a "hold" for $250 on your card to make sure you have the funds. We only run that hold once and we will release it if you don't win the auction. We have a detailed FAQ for bidders that you can read more on here: https://community.buythecar.com/buyer-faq/
