Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
I like the term "period hot rod" from the seller. With original paint, period correct flathead upgrades, and documentation to tell a unique story this Plymouth stays true to the 1940s. Being warehouse kept likely helped preserve the Plymouth so now it can be a car show favorite for those in the know.
Description
This 1947 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe is a single-owner, "period hot rod" that has accumulated 40,367 original miles. Part of the post-war P15 series, the car was maintained entirely in its stock configuration--winning multiple national accolades, including at the 1984 Plymouth Nationals--until 2005, when it was tastefully customized with period-correct mechanical enhancements. Last on the road in 2015, the coupe was preserved inside a warehouse collection before recently undergoing a thorough mechanical recommissioning. It is now offered in the state of Washington, accompanied by a clean Washington title, extensive documentation including the vehicle's very first title from Pennsylvania, and a spare engine block.

The body wears its original factory-applied paint, verified by paint meter readings, showing only minor areas of natural patina. Designed originally for traveling salesmen, the classic Business Coupe silhouette features a refined front fascia with a three-bar chrome grille, oblong parking lights, and a custom vented hood.

Additional styling elements include shaved or "frenched" taillights, bright metal moldings around the split windshield, and rear bumper fender guards. The car has been lowered by three inches for a traditional hot-rod stance and rides on original Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels wrapped in wide-whitewall Coker radial tires installed during the 2005 modifications. An original Pennsylvania inspection sticker remains affixed to the front windshield.

The engine bay houses a 217.8ci (3.5L) L-head flathead inline-six engine, which was completely rebuilt in 2005 with fresh machine work on the cylinder head. (The "P24" prefix on the engine stamping suggests this is not the factory original engine.) Swapping the single-barrel intake for vintage hot-rod speed parts, the engine is now equipped with an Edmunds Custom intake manifold feeding a dual-carburetor setup, paired with cast-iron headers and a custom dual exhaust system. These changes elevate output from a factory-rated 95 horsepower to an estimated 115 horsepower. The electrical system retains its period-correct 6-volt configuration. Recent service by long-term caretakers includes a comprehensive tune-up and the installation of a new battery, ensuring the car is in turn-key running order.

The chassis benefits from a fully overhauled brake system utilizing re-lined Chrysler-Lockheed hydraulic four-wheel drum brakes with replacement pads. The suspension was refreshed during the 2005 build with a 3-inch lowering kit and replacement shocks to balance classic handling characteristics with an aggressive profile. The undercarriage remains structurally sound, reflecting its long-term indoor storage history.

The highly original interior features a single front bench seat upholstered in factory pencil-stripe broadcloth fabric. True to its Business Coupe specification, the cabin features no rear seats, leaving the entire rear compartment carpeted and dedicated to internal cargo storage.

The dashboard retains its original light-colored woodgrain finish housing dark-background "safety signal" gauges, a locking glove box, and dual windshield wipers. New carpeting was installed in 2005, while the remainder of the upholstery, headliner, and door panels are original. Gear selection is managed by a traditional "three-on-the-tree" column-shifted three-speed manual transmission.

The vehicle is accompanied by an extensive collection of historical documentation, including a vintage photograph of the car taken in 1958, the framed original title, the original Owner's Service Policy, the Chrysler "Final OK" factory tag, a Safety Tag Notice, the "Inside Story" promotional brochure, and original owner's manuals complete with their factory envelope.
