Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
This sleek black '62 Chevrolet Bel Air "Bubbletop" is a really trick sleeper that matches its iconic, laser-straight silhouette with relentless mechanical muscle. Undergoing a flawless, rotisserie nut-and-bolt restoration, it packs a legendary 409ci V8 that has been bored and stroked to a fierce 474 cubic inches, dyno-tuning at a massive 558 horsepower. The execution is stunning, cleverly hiding a heavy-duty Tremec five-speed manual, a Detroit Locker rear end, and advanced QA1 coilovers behind unsuspecting, staggered 15-inch OEM steel wheels.
Description
This 1962 Chevrolet Bel Air "Bubbletop" underwent a total ground-up, rotisserie nut-and-bolt restoration. The build focuses on high-performance mechanical upgrades while retaining the classic silhouette of the early-1960s sport coupe. Built with an enlarged, dyno-tuned V8 and a heavily reinforced drivetrain, the car has been constructed to handle significantly increased power levels compared to its factory configuration. The Bel Air is now offered by the private seller with a clean New Hampshire title.

The exterior is finished in black paint over a laser-straight body featuring factory-style panel gaps. Visual details include the signature thin-pillar "bubbletop" roofline, bright chrome bumpers, and factory-specification trim pieces.

The car rides on a staggered set of OEM steel wheels measuring 15x7" in the front and 15x8" in the rear, all mounted with Cooper Cobra radial tires sized P225/70/R15 and P275/60/R15, respectively.

The engine compartment houses a 409ci V8 that was bored, stroked, and built to 474 cubic inches by engine builder Tom Boucher, yielding a dyno-tested 558 horsepower and 577 lb-ft of torque. The engine features an Eagle forged steel crankshaft, Eagle I-beam connecting rods, Ross pistons, and Edelbrock aluminum Performer cylinder heads with a matching intake manifold. Dual 600-cfm carburetors with K&N air filters handle fuel delivery, while an MSD distributor controls the ignition. Cooling is provided by a polished aluminum Champion four-core radiator with a polished overflow tank. Power is sent through a Centerforce dual-disc clutch inside a Lakewood SFI bellhousing, a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, and a Moser rear housing containing a 4.11:1 Detroit Locker differential with 31-spline Strange Engineering axles.

The body sits on a fully boxed factory frame modified for increased structural rigidity. The front suspension is equipped with QA1 coilovers and power-assisted disc brakes. The rear chassis incorporates a custom four-link setup, QA1 coilovers, Art Morrison traction bars, and 11-inch drum brakes. Spent gases travel through ceramic-coated 2.5-inch Doug Thorley headers, a stainless steel electronic cutout system, and Flowmaster mufflers.

The interior has been restored to match the high-quality standard of the exterior, featuring era-correct materials across the bench seating and door panels. A floor-mounted shifter operates the Tremec manual transmission, and the factory dashboard retains its original layout. Steering and standard vehicle controls remain in their stock configurations, complemented by standard lap belts and factory instrumentation.
