Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

This striking metallic silver '49 Chevrolet 3800 is a phenomenal long-bed restomod that beautifully transforms a classic commercial hauler into a premium custom cruiser. Under the hood, a built 383ci stroker V8 delivers potent performance, paired with a reliable Turbo Hydra-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission. The execution is stunning, showcasing custom ghost flames, a modern Mustang II-style independent front suspension, power four-wheel disc brakes, and a custom-hinged utility bed floor that completely prioritizes modern drivability. You definitely don't see many classic utility trucks built to this caliber, so I expect fans of these long bed Chevys to get excited.

Description

This 1949 Chevrolet 3800 is a customized, long-bed Advance Design pickup that was the subject of a multi-stage custom build initially completed in 2003, with further engine compartment fabrication completed in 2017. The truck has been modified with a 383ci stroker V8, an automatic transmission, an updated independent front suspension, and a completely reworked cargo bed. Now displaying 800 miles on an aftermarket odometer, this true mileage unknown (TMU) Chevrolet restomod is offered with build records and an Antique Vehicle branded Pennsylvania title.

The exterior was repainted in metallic silver in 2003 and features custom pinstriping, custom tailgate lettering, and ghost-style gray flames sweeping across the front end. Modifications include fiberglass rear fenders, a bright chrome grille, running boards, tinted windows, dual cowl-mounted side mirrors, and updated LED taillights.

The 4x8-foot utility bed features a custom-hinged aluminum floor panel for chassis access, along with a separate front storage compartment that houses an aluminum fuel tank beneath a hinged cover.

The truck rides on 16-inch chrome Rally wheels mounted with 225/60 Bridgestone Turanza LS-V tires.

The engine bay was heavily customized in 2017 to incorporate a smoothed firewall, a fabricated radiator cover, and a classic "batwing" air cleaner assembly, all color-matched to the silver exterior. Power is supplied by a 383ci stroker V8 equipped with an Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold, a four-barrel carburetor with an electric choke, an HEI distributor, and Holley Vintage Series valve covers with raised Chevrolet script. Cooling is handled by an aluminum radiator, and spent gases exit via coated Hooker headers. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (noted as a four-speed in the summary highlights) and a 10-bolt rear differential.

The original commercial chassis has been upgraded for modern drivability with a Mustang II-style independent front suspension assembly featuring power rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is handled by a power-assisted four-wheel disc system. The undercarriage displays a dual exhaust system routed out to the rear and the integrated structural mounts for the updated front suspension crossmember.

The cabin features replacement bucket seats upholstered in black Ultraleather with white patterned cloth inserts, complemented by matching custom door panels and a coordinated center console with integrated cup holders.

Driver amenities include an aftermarket air conditioning system, a Gennie floor shifter, a Kenwood stereo unit wired to kick-panel speakers, and an aftermarket steering wheel mounted to a tilting column. A custom body-colored dashboard panel houses a full suite of AutoMeter instrumentation, which includes a 120-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges to monitor water temperature, oil pressure, voltage, and fuel level.
