Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
Wow, this is a rare piece of independent American automotive history, made even more significant by its decades of single-family ownership under the founder of the official model registry. As one of only four shortened-wheelbase "Group III" models ever built, the next owner could very well carry on Victor's legacy of authenticating other Muntz cars with this '53 Jet, or breathe new life into it with a proper restoration.
Description
This 1953 Muntz Jet is an exceptionally rare, late-production luxury touring convertible that represents one of only 198 total units estimated to have been produced by the Muntz Car Company. Belonging to "Group III"--an exclusive, non-standard wheelbase cohort of just six vehicles built between 1953 and 1954--this car is one of only four configured with the shortened factory wheelbase. This specific chassis, number 53M551, carries monumental provenance as the long-term personal vehicle of the late Victor Munsen, the founding member, primary historian, and author of the official Muntz Jet Registry. Kept out of the public commercial auction circuit for decades as Mr. Munsen's personal baseline vehicle for cross-referencing surviving units, it is now available from his estate with a clean Washington title and an airtight "Registry Premium" guarantee of authenticity.

The exterior is finished in a striking Colorado Red paint scheme, a hue that highlights the car's custom, slab-sided body design penned by Frank Kurtis and modified by Earl "Madman" Muntz.
A matching white "Carson-style" removable soft top accompanies the vehicle, providing a sleek coupe profile when installed. All factory chrome trim, integrated rear fender skirts, and unique script badging have been preserved. Some paint blemishes and bubbling are evident on the driver side fender.

The vehicle rides on factory-style steel wheels dressed in full chrome hubcaps and wrapped in period-correct wide-whitewall tires. The shortened Group III chassis dimensions give this particular Jet a more aggressive, tightly proportioned stance compared to standard-wheelbase models. The rear cargo trunk is solid and houses historical estate documentation files that transitioned to the family following Mr. Munsen's passing in September 2025.

The custom-upholstered cockpit features a single front bench seat and matching rear seating trimmed in premium Ivory vinyl with red piping accents. The door cards and lower side panels are upholstered to match, creating a cohesive, high-end mid-century aesthetic. The cabin retains its vintage architecture, offering a luxurious and spacious environment that exemplifies Earl Muntz's vision of a high-speed executive cruiser.

The interior is presented with a three-spoke steering wheel and a clean, body-colored dashboard housing a full array of factory instrumentation. The alphanumeric chassis tag, 53M551, is cleanly mounted within the structure, breaking down to verify the 1953 model year (53), Muntz Jet model (M), and sequential serial number (551). This serial configuration places the car deep into the Evanston, Illinois production run, completely refuting any historical claims of a factory-installed Cadillac engine for this unit.

The engine bay currently houses a Cadillac V8 engine, likely 331 cubic inches but not confirmed, which represents a post-factory or modern custom swap completed during the car's lifecycle. Historically, the vehicle's late-production Evanston serial number confirms it would have left the factory equipped with the standard-issue 317 cubic-inch overhead-valve (OHV) Lincoln V8 engine after early supply agreements for Cadillac 331 blocks had dissolved. While the car currently runs on Cadillac power, the seller notes its market appreciation would be maximized if it were eventually restored back to its correct 1953 Lincoln powertrain specifications. The engine is mated to a period correct GM Hydra-Matic automatic transmission.

The shortened Group III chassis sits on an independent front suspension with a live rear axle setup, offering an advanced and stable ride for its era. Braking performance relies on a heavy-duty hydraulic drum system at all four corners. The undercarriage reflects decades of climate-controlled, indoor stewardship by the marque's foremost expert, remaining structurally robust and exceptionally well-preserved.
