Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
It's getting harder to find an "Advanced Design" Chevy that hasn't been hacked up, so seeing this Ocean Green beauty go through a 19-year frame-off restoration with its soul intact is a real treat. The 1958-spec 235ci Thriftmaster will give you that vintage inline-six charm and with the full-pressure oiling system and HEI ignition you need for actual longevity. They kept the look classic with the Cream-colored Artillery wheels and marine-grade bed wood, but hid the good stuff--like front disc brakes, a 10-bolt rear end, and a stealth Bluetooth stereo--right where you need it. This is a meticulously finished, honest pickup that balances pure nostalgia with the kind of reliability that lets you actually get out and enjoy the "3-on-the-tree" experience.
Description
This 1954 Chevrolet 3100 "Advanced Design" 1/2-Ton Pickup is said to be a fully restored truck that underwent a 19-year frame off restoration that was completed in 2025. Originally built at the Norwood, Ohio plant designated by the "N" code in the VIN, this truck came from the factory with a 235ci "Thriftmaster" inline-6 engine with a 3-on-the-tree manual transmission. The truck has been restored almost entirely to factory spec down to the original wheels and paint color, with the only differences being a modern ignition system, a front disc brake conversion, custom bench seat, modern lap belts and a modern stereo system. The vehicle is being offered with a clean California title by a private seller. The truck is located in San Diego, CA.

During the frame-off restoration, the cab and bed were sandblasted to bare metal before receiving a multi-stage finish in 2017 in Ocean Green, which is the truck's original factory color. All of the trim and chrome is replaced, and the original 16" steel "Artillery" wheels were professionally powder coated in Cream color, and have been wrapped in BFGoodrich Long Trail T/A radials (P215/75R16). Other exterior features include a color-matched exterior sun visor and rare factory-option side-mount spare tire assembly.

According to the seller, the original wood plank floor was also restored and finished with marine-grade, 25-year sailboat polyurethane. All of the trim and hardware in the bed is also new.

The seller notes that the truck received a block upgrade to a 235ci Thriftmaster inline-6 at the Norwood factory in 1958, which included utilizing a 1958/1960 casting (#3764476) for the purpose of providing a new full-pressure oiling system for superior longevity. The engine later received an electronic ignition upgrade with a Red-Cap HEI (High Energy Ignition) system for reliable starting and smoother performance. Power is sent through a rebuilt period correct 3-speed column shifted manual transmission, an original closed torque tube system driveshaft with a precision-machined connection point, and a Chevy 10-bolt rear end.

In addition to the front disc brake conversion, the truck was also given newer front shocks at some point. The factory leaf spring suspension is retained in both the front and the rear. The truck also has a 10-bolt rear end with 3.90 gears in favor of the original 6-lug rear end.

The truck's interior features a fully refinished and repainted cab, custom reupholstered bench with tan vinyl, matching custom tan vinyl door panels, new headliner, new carpet, restored steering wheel, refurbished and repainted dashboard, and all new window cranks and door openers. The truck now has lap-style seat belts that are anchored to the floor. The gauge cluster features a 90mph speedometer, oil pressure, fuel, temp and alternator gauges. The truck has been equipped with a "Stealth" Kenwood Bluetooth stereo system with a 6x9 speaker that is concealed behind the original factory dash grille. Also included with the sale are the original owner's manual and several pages of parts receipts for the build.
