Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

This '59 Apache is a wild mix of classic heavy-duty steel and modern 2500HD Suburban bones that was built to be the ultimate shop truck. Dropping a reliable iron-block 5.3L LS under the hood was a smart move, and you'll get where you need to go with that 4L60. I want to focus on the custom flatbed because that's the real highlight here. It's a trick setup with the lockable cabinets, hidden compartments and built in air compressor. The rear leaf spring suspension has airbags attached so that you can level out the ride height when you're hauling heavy loads. You're on 2WD only with this thing, so keep that in mind if you were planning on taking those 35-inch mud-terrains into the boonies. Inside, the cowhide and leather interior gives it that signature custom flare, making this a build that's ready to turn heads and actually put in some hard work.

Description

This 1959 GMC Apache was originally a 3/4 ton truck assembled at the Oakland, CA plant and had an inline-6 cylinder. The truck came from the factory with the 123.25 inch wheelbase and has the letter "B" at the end of the VIN, indicating the truck had the optional factory braking upgrade for heavy duty use. True mileage and history of the truck is unknown. Today, only the cab remains as the vehicle now rides on a modern 2010 Chevrolet Suburban 2500HD chassis with a custom flatbed. The seller notes that some parts of the truck were modified by popular SEMA Show builder Nostalgia Hot Rods. The truck is being offered with a clean California title by a private seller and is located in Riverside, CA.

Focusing on the exterior, the seller notes that Nostalgia Hot Rods gave the truck all new sheet metal, new bumpers, and the bed. The cab was repainted in matte black and given new exterior trim, door handles, and mirrors. A custom flatbed was built for the truck, complete with built in lockable cabinets, two hidden compartments in the bed with electric actuators, built-in air compressor, finished wood bed, and LED lighting all around the truck including the headlights. The bed is also height adjustable via a rear airbag leveling system that is attached to the top of the leaf springs. The steel front bumper features an LED light bar, LED rock lights, and a steel cable winch. The truck rides on 35 inch Falken Wildpeak M/T Offroad tires, and 20 inch Lonestar Offroad black wheels.

The Apache now has a 5.3L iron block LS V8 with no modifications. The engine is linked to a 4L60E automatic transmission, and is cooled by an aluminum radiator with a single electric fan. Wiring and plumbing has been tucked under new inner fenders built by Nostalgia Hot Rods. Two batteries power the engine, winch, air suspension and air compressor. The engine is hooked up to a Black Widow exhaust system.

The truck is on a 2010 Chevrolet Suburban 2500HD chassis, and retains the chassis's factory disc brakes, suspension, and rear axle. The transmission is 4-wheel drive compatible, but the seller notes the vehicle is currently configured in 2-wheel drive only. The air tank and compressor can be seen below the bed, as well as the airbags that are shackled to the top of the rear leaf springs.

The truck's interior features a custom cowhide and brown leather interior, complete with cowhide accented bench, door panels and a full cowhide headliner. The cab now has a custom center console with cupholders, Pioneer radio, VintageAir A/C controls and all the switches for the lights, bed actuators and air bags. Other custom features include a Dolphin gauge cluster, Wilwood brake pedal, billet throttle pedal, CB radio and police scanner, aftermarket steering wheel, and secret interior compartments.
