Wrench Report

Oh boy, Mopar enthusiasts are going to lose their minds over this one. This is a true, authenticated 426 HEMI Roadrunner in factory black! It doesn't get much better than the legendary Gen 2 HEMI, arguably the most coveted Mopar engine of all time. 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque is going to be no joke on the road. A repaint to the factory Black Velvet is understandable given the car's age but you have to appreciate the steps taken to preserve this car and keep it on the road. 44,000 original miles tells you that this car has been collected but also enjoyed and maintained, and it's factory equipped with some great go fast parts. There's signs of heavy duty options everywhere like the HEMI XHD suspension upgrade, the 727 Torqueflite automatic, and the front disc brakes. Somebody optioned this car to be a gem of a performance machine. You're getting an authentic, well-documented piece of automotive history that will give you ultimate bragging rights and crazy amounts of fun.

Description

This 1969 Plymouth HEMI Roadrunner is confirmed to have left the Lynch Road factory in Detroit, Michigan as an RM21 code 2-door coupe in triple black. Most notably equipped with the 426ci HEMI dual 4-barrel carbureted V8, this HEMI Roadrunner is believed to have received a date correct dealer replacement block and was also reported to have later received a '73 but factory correct Heavy Duty 727 Torqueflite 3 speed automatic. With only one repaint in its factory Black Velvet color, this Roadrunner is said to have been well preserved with only 44,000 original miles. The vehicle is located in Pasco, Washington and is being offered with a clean Washington title by the selling dealer (Washington dealer ID# 11731). Included in the sale and viewable in the photo gallery is the original broadcast sheet, original invoice, a HEMI Authentication Report, Galen Govier Report and Beep Beep Beep Magazine article featuring other 1969 Plymouth Roadrunners.

According to the vehicle's broadcast sheet, this '69 Roadrunner came from the factory painted in Black Velvet and came equipped with the chrome drip rail and b-pillar mouldings. No stripes were reported on the broadcast sheet, indicating that after the vehicle's repaint in its factory color, red pinstripe accents were added and the hood and front fenders received matte black vinyl stripes.

The vehicle is also equipped with black 15x6 steel wheels with "dog dish" style hubcaps, wrapped in Firestone G70-15 redline tires. The broadcast sheet indicates code W25, which confirms that these wheels are similar to factory spec, though the selling dealer notes that they are likely not the factory original wheels.

The vehicle also features period correct "HEMI" and "Roadrunner" badging throughout and the Roadrunner cartoon vinyl decal located on the doors.

This Roadrunner was indeed authenticated to be a true HEMI car, though it is believed that the engine the car left the factory with was dealer replaced with another date correct 426ci HEMI block. The HEMI V8 produces 425 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque, and features factory correct dual 4 barrel carburetors, and the "Coyote Duster" air cleaner with the Fresh Air package. At some point the vehicle's history, the Heavy Duty A-727 Torqueflite 3 speed automatic was replaced with another unit with a 1973 year date casting. The car also came equipped with the maximum cooling package, provided by the vehicle's engine driven fan and the original radiator.

The broadcast sheet indicates that this Roadrunner came factory equipped with power front disc brakes (Line 6, section B, codes 41 and 1). The original master cylinder and brake booster is also visible in the engine bay photos. The vehicle is also factory equipped with the HEMI Extra Heavy Duty suspension package with a front sway bar and Heavy Duty firm ride shocks, which can be decoded on line 10 on the suspension section with codes 15 and 25. Also factory equipped is power steering, which corresponds to code S77 in line 10 of the broadcast sheet.

In the rear, power is delivered to the original A32 Super Performance Axle Package featuring a 4.10 ratio Dana 60 sure grip rear differential. Also factory original is the 2.5 inch dual exhaust with an H-pipe (line 9, code N41), and the factory rear leaf spring suspension.

Inside, the car retains the factory original M6S pewter and black color combo, with the vinyl bucket seats, rear bench seat, door panels, dash, headliner and carpet. The 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission is configured in the column shift position. The factory full gauge cluster is intact along with the included factory tachometer, all behind the factory wood-grain steering wheel and 'beep beep' horn. Other factory original features include a driver side remote mirror, 3 speed windshield wipers, heater and defroster, AM radio, and the passenger rear arm rests with ashtrays.

Important details of this Roadrunner are decoded on the broadcast sheet as follows:

  1. RM21: Road Runner 2-Door Coupe

@BossHoss3406pack, check this beauty out. You could have had a hemi with a Road Runner attached.

You definitely don’t see many of these around anymore. Especially numbers matching hemi Good luck everyone.

pistolgrip May 7, 1:53 pm PDT
@AMXBob So true. There were supposedly only about 356 "RM21" code cars made in 1969 that had the 426 HEMI. I can only imagine how many actually survive today.
MoparHemi May 12, 5:06 am PDT
it's not a numbers matching, engine is probably a 66. Grab me the date stamp on the block and the VIN off the block. This car sold a yr ago. Looks to me like somebody isn't being completely honest on the engine
