Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

It's a serious level-up when a humble 318 Challenger gets the big block treatment. This '71 has made the ultimate jump from a small block cruiser to a big block beast, trading its original setup for a period-correct 440ci Magnum and a 4 speed. While it was born in Autumn Bronze with a brown and tan interior, the move to a custom metallic bronze and a full black vinyl cockpit anchored by that legendary Hurst pistol grip gives it a much meaner attitude. Adding FiTech fuel injection and front disc brakes turns this into a reliable, sorted muscle car that's built for the street, not just the showroom.

Description

According to the decoded VIN and preserved broadcast sheet, this 1971 Dodge Challenger rolled out of the Hamtramck, Michigan factory in Dark Gold Metallic and was equipped with the 318ci small block attached to a 3-speed automatic. It has undergone a recent restoration with some modifications, now sporting a 440ci Magnum V8 and a A833 4 speed manual transmission. The car has several other modern upgrades and touches, such as front disc brakes, power steering, and more. The vehicle is located in Celeste, Texas and is now being offered with a clean Pennsylvania title by the selling dealer American Steel Classics (Dealer ID# P171721).

The broadcast sheet indicates that this 1971 Dodge Challenger was originally painted in Dark Gold Metallic (GK6), also known as Autumn Bronze. The exterior also came equipped with a black vinyl top, and black body side mouldings. During the restoration, the car was repainted in a custom mixed color that was created to closely resemble the original GK6 bronze, and a new black vinyl top was fitted. The vehicle was also modified with front and rear black spoilers, and received vinyl black side stripes.

Other modifications to the exterior also include an R/T style hood with "440 Magnum" badges added. The vehicle also now rides on new 17 inch American Racing VN501 "Magnum 500" style wheels, which are wrapped in Sumitomo radial tires.

During the restoration, the 318ci V8 was replaced in favor of a larger displacement period correct 440ci Magnum V8. The engine was given FiTech fuel injection, and was freshened up with new valve covers, intake manifold, K&N air cleaner, and fresh engine block paint. Engine cooling is provided by a traditional clutch fan setup with a period correct radiator and fan shroud. The car originally came equipped with the A904 Torqueflite light duty 3-speed automatic transmission, but has had a manual conversion and replaced with an A833 4 speed manual transmission.

The seller notes that the underside of the vehicle was also renewed and repainted in black coating. All of the factory suspension has been retained, including the torsion bar front suspension and rear leaf springs, though the vehicle now stops with a front disc brake conversion. Power steering was also added, and new fuel and brake lines were added. Fuel is delivered via an electrically operated in-tank fuel pump. Power is sent through the driveshaft to a Mopar 8 and 3/4 sure grip rear end. The vehicle has new stainless headers and a 2.5 inch dual exhaust with an H-pipe and Dynomax mufflers.

This Challenger originally came from the factory with the code H6T7 two tone brown and tan interior with vinyl bucket seats, which has now all been replaced with a solid black theme throughout. The front seats and rear bench are black vinyl upholstery. The manual conversion included a factory style clutch and brake pedal, and the wood grain center console has been removed to accommodate the manual transmission's Hurst pistol grip style shifter. The dashboard now features Autometer gauges, and a Retrosound vintage-style modern bluetooth stereo.

Hi, it looks like it was done around 2017/2018. The car does not have air conditioning and the heater is not hooked up.
