Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

A patriotic callback to the days of straight line street racing of the 50's. This T-Bird has shed its cruiser feathers for big block Chevy power and huge rear Hoosier drag radials to give it a competitive edge at the strip. There's red, white and blue everywhere on this thing, but it's not just flashy colors and bald eagles. You're getting full coilover suspension and Wilwood disc brakes to keep the car planted when that big block comes to life.

Description

This 1955 Ford Thunderbird is a custom roadster that has been modified for straight-line performance and drag racing. Showing 2,613 miles since the completion of the build, the car departs from its original configuration in favor of a specialized powertrain and chassis setup. The vehicle features a patriotic aesthetic with a red, white, and blue color scheme incorporating 27 bald eagle graphics, emblems, and embroidered details throughout. With over $152,000 in receipts documented for the build, this custom Thunderbird is now offered with build documentation and a clean Idaho title.

The exterior is finished in a monochromatic red base with custom American flag graphics on the sides and rear deck. The body has been modified with shaved door handles to create a smoother profile, and it retains the classic first-generation Thunderbird silhouette without a roof.

The car rides on a drag racing wheel-and-tire setup that features narrow front wheels and wide Hoosier drag radials in the rear to maximize launching traction.

The front-hinged hood opens to reveal a Chevrolet 396ci V8 engine that has been built for high-performance applications and equipped with a 500-shot nitrous oxide injection system. Power is routed through a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 automatic transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear end fitted with a Positraction limited-slip differential. The engine bay is organized to house the necessary fuel, nitrous, and cooling plumbing required for the modified big-block powerplant.

The chassis has been updated with a custom suspension system designed to improve weight transfer and straight-line stability.

The underbody structures have been altered to accommodate the wider rear wheel-and-tire combination and the reinforced Ford 9-inch rear axle assembly. Braking components have been updated to handle the increased power, and the custom dual exhaust system vents spent gases through a high-flow configuration.

The cockpit features bucket seats upholstered in a custom red, white, and blue leather theme with bald eagle embroidery on the backrests. The minimalist dashboard houses aftermarket competition-style instrumentation to monitor vital engine statistics along with controls for the nitrous oxide system. A floor-mounted racing shifter manages the automatic transmission, and the interior retains a simplified, performance-oriented layout.

The custom upholstered trunk is shown here with the nitrous oxide tank, fuel cell, and battery. Also shown is one of the many bald eagles that have been applied all throughout the vehicle.
