Wrench Report

Perfect canvas for an A-body build. You already get some hard work and cost out of the way with a like-new 350ci small-block crate engine, a stronger 700R4 overdrive automatic transmission, and front disc brakes. As for the rest, it's totally up to you how you want to build it while you drive it.

Description

This 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle hardtop coupe was originally manufactured as a Malibu V8 at the GM assembly plant in Van Nuys, California ("L" code in the VIN). Built as a Super Sport tribute, this classic A-body coupe features an upgraded crate engine, an overdrive automatic transmission, and modernized secondary instrumentation. Having accumulated approximately 6,000 miles since the new engine was installed, the car is now offered by the current owner with a clean California title.

The body is finished in red paint accented by white racing stripes on the trunk lid, paired with a black aftermarket hood. The exterior retains its classic chrome bumpers, headlights, with the Malibu trim replaced with SS badging. The finish exhibits some clear coat peeling across the body, and a visible rust spot is noted on the lower portion of the driver's side front fender.

The car rides on 15-inch Chevrolet mag-style steel wheels fitted with polished trim rings and center caps, wrapped in period-correct BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires.

The cabin features its original, factory-style black vinyl interior. The front bucket seats show standard wear and tears in the vinyl upholstery, and the headliner is beginning to separate near the driver's side sail panel. The interior maintains its factory layout, augmented by a floor-mounted B&M shifter and a modern Alpine AM/FM radio head unit. The car is factory-equipped with air conditioning, though the seller notes the system currently requires a Freon recharge to blow cold. The interior also features a Chevrolet factory-style two-spoke steering wheel. The dashboard retains its original sweep-style instrument housing, which has been upgraded with a set of aftermarket AutoMeter Sport-Comp gauges to accurately monitor critical engine vital signs. All factory wiring leads have been refreshed to accommodate the updated instrumentation.

The engine bay houses a 350ci small-block Chevrolet crate V8 engine that has been driven roughly 6,000 miles since installation. The engine utilizes a four-barrel carburetor, a chrome Edelbrock air cleaner, and standard ignition accessories. Power is directed to a 10-bolt rear end via an upgraded 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Exhaust gases flow through an aftermarket H-pipe dual exhaust system.

The vehicle retains its factory-specification independent front suspension and rear coil spring setup, delivering a traditional muscle car road feel. Power steering is equipped, while the braking system has been modernized with a front disc brake conversion paired with standard hydraulic drum brakes at the rear.
