Wrench Report

By Chris Esparza

RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.

LS3 swaps may be common in the restomod community, but when you start adding turbos, commonality goes out the window! This is a clean, well built Camaro that supports the forced induction power with drivability upgrades everywhere. The upgraded fuel system, 6-speed manual, Moser 9 inch rear, and the combination of QA1, Speedtech and Detroit Speed suspension with modern Corvette level stopping power are going to make for a seriously planted driving experience even when mashing the throttle (if you dare).

Description

This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro coupe is a high-performance pro-touring restomod built as a Super Sport tribute. The vehicle features a custom-built, turbocharged, and stroked 416ci LS3 V8 engine paired with a six-speed manual gearbox and a heavily re-engineered chassis. Displaying 161 miles on its digital odometer since the completion of the project, this pro-touring build is finished in Blue Metallic over a customized black and white houndstooth interior. The vehicle being offered out of St. Louis, Missouri by the selling dealer with a clean Kentucky title.

The exterior is finished in Blue Metallic paint, and includes an Endura color-matched front bumper, a Randy's front chin spoiler, and a custom cowl-induction hood. The brightwork has been refreshed, and the rear fascia is modernized with a pair of Fesler RS-style LED taillights.

The vehicle sits low on a set of premium, lightweight Fikse FM5 wheels measuring 18x8 inches up front and a massive 18x12 inches out back. To accommodate the extreme rear wheel width, the chassis has been modified with deep-set rear mini-tubs. The wheels are wrapped in competition-grade Toyo Proxes R888 tires, sized 245/40R18 in the front and a steamroller-spec 335/30R18 at the rear.

The refreshed cabin features high-back bucket seats upholstered in classic black vinyl with white houndstooth cloth inserts, a theme that carries over to the rear bench and custom side panels. A factory-style center console houses the manual Hurst shifter and storage compartment, while new black carpeting and a fresh headliner complete the interior refurbishment.

Other interior features include a smooth dashboard featuring a premium Detroit Speed (DSE) instrument insert, and a MOMO sport steering wheel in black. This housing is fitted with a complete set of custom Speedhut digital/analog gauges designed to accurately track vehicle speed, engine RPM, boost pressure, and critical operational fluid metrics.

The highly detailed engine bay houses a 416ci stroker LS3 V8 built with a Callies Compstar crankshaft, Callies connecting rods, Clevite bearings, Diamond pistons, a UMS Stage 3 turbo-specification camshaft, and Mast Black Label LS3 256cc cylinder heads. Forced induction is supplied by a BorgWarner S485 turbocharger sourced from Forced Inductions, which breathes through Hooker exhaust manifolds, JGS wastegates, and a TiAL blow-off valve. A custom fuel system feeds the power plant via Siemens Deka 80-pound injectors, dual Walbro 255-lph in-tank pumps, and a Rick's Tanks stainless steel EFI fuel reservoir. Power is transferred through a Tremec Magnum T-56 six-speed manual transmission, a McLeod RXT dual-disc clutch, and a Moser Engineering 9-inch rear end fitted with a Wavetrac differential and heavy-duty 35-spline axles.

The car rides on a full Speedtech Performance Pro-Touring front suspension system incorporating upgraded tubular control arms, an oversized front sway bar, and QA1 double-adjustable coilover shocks. The rear geometry is stabilized by a Detroit Speed Quadralink four-link suspension setup with matching adjustable coilovers. Stopping power is managed by a power-assisted Kore3 C6 Z51 brake kit featuring 340mm front and 330mm rear slotted rotors bound by a Wilwood master cylinder.
