Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
A well cared for big block El Camino right here and the seller has the proof to back it up with $34,000 in recent parts and labor receipts. Rebuilt 396 big block, built 4 speed automatic with overdrive and a shift kit, and 12 bolt rear. This is the combo you want for being all business in the front, and lots of party in the back.
Description
This 1970 Chevrolet El Camino is a restored utility coupe that benefits from a multi-stage mechanical and structural overhaul. Sourced out of a Texas auction in 2021, the vehicle received an additional $34,824 in parts and labor investments between 2021 and 2023 under previous ownership. Acquired by the current seller from an estate in January 2024, the vehicle underwent final wiring, floor pan sealing, and assembly. Driven just 15 miles since 2024 and approximately 33 miles total since its mechanical restoration, this El Camino is accompanied by three pages of itemized build receipts, estate documentation, and a clean title.

The exterior has been refinished from its factory classic ivory shade to a vibrant metallic purple with traditional dual sport stripes. Features include a steel cowl-induction hood, chrome bumpers, dual side mirrors, and a color-matched tonneau cover over a solid cargo bed. The vehicle stands on factory-style wheels equipped with original beauty rings and center caps, mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A white-letter tires. While the body panels are largely solid, the seller notes minor remaining areas of lower body aging typical of the era.

The cabin features factory-style bucket seats that have been refreshed with new foam cushions and custom track extensions on the driver's side for improved legroom. The interior restoration included cutting out old floor sheet metal and installed replacement floor pans, which were subsequently sealed, lined with Thermo-Tec heat and noise-suppression insulation, and topped with new black carpeting, reproduction floor mats, and replacement door sill plates. A factory-style center console bisects the front seats and features mostly new trim components, while the black headliner and dashboard pad remain in good condition.

The interior also features a tilt steering wheel, a new accelerator pedal assembly, and a newly installed Dakota Digital RTX electronic instrument system housed within the factory dash bezel. The odometer displays 32,298 miles, reflecting total chassis mileage. Entertainment has been upgraded with a Custom Autosound USA-740 AM/FM receiver featuring a multi-color display, Bluetooth connectivity, an RDS tuner, and 300 watts of output directed to premium rear speakers. The seller note indicates that while the main dashboard lighting, turn signals, and glovebox illumination are fully operational, the lower door and courtesy lights have not yet been wired.

The engine bay houses a rebuilt 396ci V8 engine that was completely disassembled and reconstructed with fresh pushrods, a performance valve train, and entirely new gaskets, hoses, fuel lines, and hardware totaling $13,607 in dedicated engine receipts. It is equipped with a fully rebuilt four-barrel carburetor, Mallory electronic ignition, Sanderson headers, customized valve covers, a new high-output starter, a replacement fuel pump, and a new heater core. Cooling is handled by a heavy-duty four-row aluminum radiator paired with a floating fan, a long-neck water pump, and a new expansion regulator. The undercarriage features a newly primed and painted frame structure supported by an upgraded power brake booster with an auxiliary vacuum canister, new brake lines, power front disc brakes, Rancho shocks, and replacement upper trailing arms.

Power is transferred to a 12-bolt rear end equipped with a Summit Racing finned aluminum cover via a replacement driveline and a professionally built 700R4 four-speed automatic transmission (noted as a 400r4 in early notes). The overdrive gearbox is fitted with a performance shift kit, a Painless Performance converter lockup control kit, a new neutral safety switch, and fresh transmission mounts. Spent gasses travel through a 2.5-inch CermaKromed dual exhaust system wrapped for thermal management. A brand-new fuel tank and integrated sending unit handle fuel storage.
