Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
It is rare to come across a true St. Louis-built Mopar that actually keeps a period correct 440ci big block and that heavy-duty A833 4-speed manual. I've seen a lot of Mopar restorations in my time and have done a few of my own, and this Charger R/T is definitely the real deal. It is without a doubt a serious find for any collector. The factory FK5 Dark Burnt Orange Metallic paint is a total standout, and gives this Charger aggressive attitude. I can appreciate some of the must-have mechanical updates here, like adding power steering and front power disc brakes. You're getting a rare, turn-key, well preserved piece of automotive history if you can score the keys to this one.
Description
Decoding the VIN and fender tag on this 1970 Dodge Charger R/T indicates that it is in fact a true R/T that was assembled at the St. Louis, MO plant and came with the 440ci big block V8, 4 barrel carburetor and A833 4 speed manual. In addition to some modern treatments, this R/T has a period correct replacement 440ci V8 and 4-speed manual, and many other factory specifications that have been preserved or restored. This 1970 Dodge Charger R/T is now being offered by the selling dealer American Steel Classics (Dealer ID# P171721) with a clean Texas title. The vehicle is located in Celeste, Texas.

Like many Chargers of the period, the fender tag indicates this R/T had an unusual color combination in Dark Burnt Orange Metallic, white Vinyl top, white longitudinal side stripes, and tan interior. This Charger R/T has undergone a repaint to its factory paint code of FK5 Dark Burnt Orange Metallic, but now sports a black vinyl top and transverse black vinyl trunk strap. The car now has 17" American Racing VN501 "Magnum 500" style wheels. Original fender tag, VIN and body stamps are all present on the car and can be seen in the photos. The selling dealer notes that all of the exterior lighting works properly.

As stated by the seller, the Charger has a replacement 440ci engine with a 4 barrel carburetor. OEM replacement parts are visible throughout: a Chrysler radiator, the distributor, alternator, plumbing, and wiring. The vehicle also has a new mastery cylinder and brake booster. The firewall, inner fenders and core support are all color matched in Dark Sunburnt Orange. Connected to the engine is a factory exhaust manifold, an H-pipe, and Flowmaster mufflers. Power is delivered through a replacement A833 heavy duty 4-speed manual transmission.

The suspension retains the factory front torsion bar system, but now has a power disc brake conversion in the front. The vehicle retains the factory leaf spring setup in the rear, and the Dana 60 rear end with 3.54 Suregrip gears. According to the fender tag, this Charger did not come with power steering, but now has power steering equipped with its own cooler.

The original tan interior has been replaced with all black, including the front bucket seats, center buddy seat, rear bench, carpet, floor mats, door panels, dash pad, and headliner. The interior is all period correct, including the faux wood grain dash and wood grip steering wheel emblazoned with the Fratzog logo. OEM gas, brake and clutch pedals are equipped, as well as a faux wood pistol grip shifter. The selling dealer notes that the horn and 3-speed wipers are fully operable. The factory radio has been replaced with a modern stereo head unit.
