Wrench Report
RestoMods Head Mechanic. 20 year classic car mechanic & builder.
This "bumpside" F-100 Ranger strikes the perfect balance between a timeless vintage look and modernized hot rod. Barr's Performance and Restoration nailed the aesthetic with a flawless factory-style two-tone red and white finish, but under the skin, this short-bed is a completely different animal. The 289ci small block under the hood is what sets this truck apart from other F100 builds: with COMP solid lifter cam, Cleveland heads and Holley EFI you get an impressive 400 horsepower (Just watch the included videos and you'll see what I mean.) With a modern Heidt's independent front suspension replacing the primitive twin-I-beam setup and a highway-friendly AOD transmission, this California cruiser is built to actually handle the road, not just bounce down it.
Description
This 1969 Ford F-100 Ranger is a two-wheel-drive, short-bed "bumpside" pickup that was acquired by the seller in April 2020. According to the seller, the truck underwent a full restoration and modification by Barr's Performance and Restoration out of Naples, Florida, initially completed sometime in 2017. The truck was originally built for a customer of Barr's, then purchased back by the shop and modified further. After the seller acquired the truck in 2020 and had it shipped to California, further powertrain updates were performed. It is equipped with a modern independent front suspension, aftermarket fuel injection, a four-speed automatic transmission, and an updated climate control system. The odometer shows 25,676 miles, approximately 2,185 of which were added by the seller. This F-100 is now offered by the private seller out of Winchester, California with a clean California title.

The short-bed exterior features the model's distinct longitudinal body groove and Ranger trim package elements. To accommodate the revised fuel system, an aluminum fuel tank was relocated from the cab to a mounting position beneath the cargo bed. The truck has all new side trim, and retains its factory-style chrome bumpers, grilles, and mirrors, while the exhaust has been updated with a custom-fabricated setup exiting at the rear. The truck was painted in a factory style two-tone red and white combo. The seller notes that touch up paint and about a quart of paint is also included with the sale.

18 inch Ridler 645 Series wheels are fitted with Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires in front, and Nitto NT555R Extreme Drag tires in rear.

The engine bay houses a newly installed high-performance 289ci V8 equipped with Cleveland cylinder heads, a COMP solid-lifter camshaft with roller rockers, an air-gap intake manifold, and a Holley electronic fuel injection system. The engine produces an estimated 400 horsepower and has accumulated approximately 300 miles since installation, with its first oil change recently completed using Valvoline 20W-50 synthetic racing oil. BG Products were also used for the lube, oil and filter service. Cooling is managed by an aluminum radiator, and the truck features a comprehensive Painless Wiring harness and a new Holley engine computer. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an AOD four-speed automatic transmission and a Ford 9-inch rear end fitted with 3.91:1 gears.

The chassis has been upgraded with a Heidt's independent front suspension system that incorporates tubular control arms and an integrated sway bar. The front suspension also has a power front disc brake conversion. The steering assembly has been overhauled with a Lokar rack and pinion to complement the modern front-end geometry. The rear suspension retains its classic leaf-spring configuration, while the undercarriage presents a clean appearance with the relocated fuel tank visible between the rear frame rails.

The cabin features a standard bench seat and factory-style interior trim packages. All of the interior metalwork is color matched to the exterior. Driver amenities include a Vintage Air climate control system and an Ididit chrome tilt steering column with an aftermarket steering wheel. A digital display for the Holley EFI system is included inside the cabin to monitor real-time engine vitals. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 25,676 miles, though total chassis mileage is unknown.
